Press Release August 28th 2014:
Artz Dances to the top of the Premiership Podium
Young local irish dancers from the Artz Collective in Altona North have beat the odds & placed 1st in the last three beginner premiership competitions in Melbourne. Pictured here winning the Beginner Premiership 10yrs & over is Artz student, Mairead Foley from Altona at the McAleer Premiership in Langwarren. As the Artz Collective's first Premiership Champion, Mairead's win had her teammates cheering as she topped the scores in all 3 of her dances for the day. This was the first of a run of wins, seconds, thirds and places from Artz students over the next 10 weeks, a surprise endorsement of the performing arts school's irish dance programs, after the Artz Collective only introduced their brand of classes in 2012.
Pictured on top of the podium in August, winning the TUS or Primary grade for 7yrs is Zac Elliott from Newport. Zac studies irish dance, classical ballet, singing & jazz dance at the Artz Collective. Also on top of the podium in July was Zoe Elliott, from Newport, reigning Primary Premiership Champion at the O'Connor Feis for 9yrs. Young Zoe studies irish dance, ballet, jazz dance & singing at the Artz Collective.
Artz Collective founder & principal, Ziggy Clements, puts the students early success down to the structed training programs that the Artz Faculty and Artz Head of Irish Dance, Nicole Horner TCRG (nee Miles), have designed to help develop strong & fit young dancers. These programs include ballet training and core strengthening to help protect and conserve young irish dancers' bodies against
injury that can be so prevalent with the demands of irish dancing. Miss Nicole, who gained her teachers accreditation for irish dance, known as a TCRG in Dublin, joined the Artz Collective with irish dance introductory classes late in 2011 and is herself a former competitor on the World Irish Dance Championship stage so she is thrilled to be able to pass on her experience and skills to a new generation of irish dancers at the Artz Collective.

Local kids on the Melbourne Show stage
Local performing arts school, the Artz Collective was recently selected to perform at the Royal Melbourne Show where students from Melbourne’s west aged 5-25yrs performed in a terrific experience for western youth in the arts.
Founded & run by Melbourne based performer, Ms Ziggy Clements (Motherhood the Musical, Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables, Neighbours) the Artz Collective began over 13 years ago & has made a name for itself by giving students terrific performance opportunities. The Melbourne Show is one of many, others being at Disneyland & California Adventure Park, alongside Hugh Jackman for the BMDI, Tania Doko from Bachelor Girl and local events like the Newport Folk Festival. With some of Melbourne’s most respected performing arts teachers on the team, including former head of the National Ballet School, Ms Joanne Adderley & ballroom dance champion, April McMahon, they are always on the look out for opportunities for their students to perform out in the community.
Ziggy is a great believer in youth arts in the west. ” It always amazes me just how much of talent there is locally in the west. I find that children from the western suburbs often miss out on performing arts opportunities as parents can be unaware of them, or are working so hard they find it hard to get children to activities, plus in the west, language can also be a barrier. And in our sports mad society, people tend to think about sports first and forget about the terrific physical training and self-confidence that the performing arts can provide for children. The Melbourne Show performance enabled us to put 20 performers on-stage, aged from 5yrs up to adults who were singing live, and dancing in a different & public environment.
Giving students these terrific opportunities is all part of what the Artz Collective does in developing students. Children can get to high school age & choose a career in the performing arts as Ziggy & her team have helped many local kids on the road to a career. Others are just in it for fun & friendship meanwhile develop leadership qualities, organisational skills and most importantly self-confidence. Ziggy thinks that the kids of today are going to need much more of it, and performing at the Melbourne Show is yet another way to bring the best out in the children of the Artz Collective.
Maribrynong Leader Article, Jan 2013: “ A highlight among many in 2012 at the Artz Collective Performing Arts School, was the clean sweep of all medals in the Under 8yrs Vocal (singing) section at the Victorian Performing Arts Challenge . Add this to their 100% medal rate in their first Irish Dance competitions, over 20 medals for their Under 8yrs Showgroup Troupe plus a 100% pass rate for all of their singing and dance exams and you begin to see why this boutique school … is known in the industry as a force to be reckoned with.
“A school run by a professional Musical Theatre performer and former dancer certainly makes a difference,” says Ms Ziggy Clements, Artz Collective founder and principal. And she should know, having played the role of “Brooke” in the 4 woman comedy, “Motherhood the Musical” around Australia over the past two years after a 20yr career treading the boards.
“It means we can attract dedicated teachers who are also professionals in their fields, so they know exactly how to teach to give children great basics. They inspire students to want to become even better. But what’s really brilliant is we can even help students to have their own career on stage.
Artz Collective classes include multiple forms of dance, singing, acting and drama. In 2013 a special Music Theatre short course program is to be hosted by Ziggy Clements. They even boast lots of boys in their classes, especially in Breakdance, Irish Dance and Hip-Hop which Ziggy attributes to TV shows, Australia’s Got Talent and X-Factor. “It’s terrific to see boys up there giving it a go as well, as they are always so well received”. With classes starting at 18mths up to classes for Adult and VCE students, Artz Collective has a huge array of ages and lessons.
